WoW Hunter Guide - All You Need To Know To Be a Great Hunter

By: Vincent Gottfried (Jul 31, 2009 09:41 am)

In WOW, as well as many other games, the term hunter refers to a class that uses long range weapons versus up close combat. This class is generally weak and not good at melee fighting. They use bullets or arrows fired from a safe distance. In WOW they also use pet systems and traps to vanquish their foes.

Selecting Race

If you have made the choice to play as a hunter you have to be very careful of the race you choose since that will have a big impact on your life as a hunter. Here are the races you can choose from: Night Elves, Dwarf, Draenei, Tauren, Troll, Orc, and Blood Elves. Here are the skills each race has:

1. Night Elves: Shadowmeld. This gives them the ability to hide and quickness for extra dodge.

2. Dwarf: Gun Specialization which increases critical hit rate and Stonfeform can counter debuffs like disease, poison, bleeding.

3. Draenei: Can heal yourself or your pet; it also has Heroic Presence which improves hit by 1% for all member of the party.

4. Tauren: War Stomp can be used to escape from melee range and back to your advantageous range. Endurance will increase base health by 5% and it stack with Endurance Training.

5. Troll: Bow Specialization add your critical hit rate using bow; couple this with berserking and you will get quite good DPS. HP regeneration and beast slaying ability are also nice to have as a Troll.

6. Orc: Command will increase your pet damage by 5% and Blood Fury can boost your attack power.

7. Blood Elves: Arcane Torrent will silence enemies and refills their mana.

As you can see, each available race has their own abilities to support your life as a hunter, but I suggest narrowing your choice to Night Elves and Dwarf for the Alliance faction; for the Horde faction, take your pick between Orc, Troll, and Tauren. The reasons behind my recommendation lays in your next step: selecting your talents build.

Talents Build

Like other classes, there are three talents tree which you can focus as a hunter: Beast Mastery, Marksmanship, and Survival. You may find different recommendation in different WoW Hunter Guide, so in the end it is up to you to pick the most suitable playing style for your hunter.

Beast Mastery

Orc is best here due to their command traits which boost pets' damage 5%. Orc is resistant to stun and by using Blood Fury they can boost their damage. Add a high DPS pet so you can deal more damage in PvP mode. A good tanking pet such as a boar helps with leveling.

Marksmanship

Dwarf and Troll are the most recommended for this path since both of them have weapon specialization which mean more damage. If you playing this hunter type; take a tank pet such a bear or boar and stay within safe distance from your enemies. If you choose Night Elves, shadowmeld is useful, but only in PvP.

Survival

I recommend Tauren for this type of hunter since they have war stomp and higher health and can buff their group with auras. This type of hunter doesn't generally have good DPS.

WoW is a complex game with numerous combination and possibilities. This is a Basic Hunters Guide which can provide helpful information when you are creating your first hunter. Combine the races and talents in whatever way you want to create the hunter that best suites your playing style. Be creative.
